The gas is made in the conical flask, conc hydrochloric acid being added from the tap funnel. The drying agent (concentrated sulphuric acid) is contained in a Drechsel bottle, the gas being collected in a syringe. Dry gases must not be collected over water! Silicone rubber is used for the tubing because chlorine will not attack it.
